I was so excited to hear that some folks had started a roller derby league in my area. I can't, of course, participate, but given how awesome it looks, I was glad to see that our resident femal population could get in on the action.
But speaking of excitement, I was super pumped when one member contacted me because they needed some photos done. So on a rainy Sunday night, I headed out to the Kilsyth arena to watch and record the fun. Here's what we came up with.
You can also see the entire set here.
This race was awesome, and I was lucky enough to be the official race photographer.
There were two courses on offer: the first was a fun, very achievable, 25 km route that featured 4km of kayaking, followed by a 15 km bike, and a 6 km run. The other course followed an ambitious route with a 40km bike, followed by a 16 km run, an 18km kayak, a 20 km run, and a 6 km run. Wow.
The race took place all over the Bruce Peninsula, and as one might guess, that made for some really cool backgrounds and a lot of cool shots.
You can find the shots on facebook here, and if you are want to buy prints, you can do that here. Prints are only available for purchase until September 30, though, so don't put it off.
The Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race
Lat year on Canada day, I shot a bunch of fireworks photos from the 10th St. bridge here in Owen Sound. I pulled out all the stops in terms of technique-the camera was perched on a tripod, I used the lowest iso I could use, and used long exposures while using a black card to block extraneous light. I liked the shots a lot, and some were used to advertise this year's event.
This year, I wanted to do things differently, so I sort of threw technique out of the window. I left my tripod at home, and instead of trying (vainly) to keep my hands from moving, I used long shutter speeds to emphasize movement. It can be pretty hard to focus in the dark, so sometimes, I guessed at it, and sometimes went way off on purpose. Here's what I came up with:
